A short selection from a lecture given at Sulam Yaakov this past Wednesday. Ariel Mayse is a doctoral candidate in Jewish thought at Harvard University, where he is working with Profs. Arthur Green and Bernard Septimus. He has been a student of Jewish mysticism for many years, and his dissertation focuses on the question of language in early Hasidut. He teaches a class on Hasidism and prayer each Monday evening in the “Kloyze” at Yakar – Center for Tradition and Creativity, and is currently studying in the Isralight/Yeshivat Orayta educators’ fellowship. His most recent publication is “The Role of Kabbalah in Revitalizing Modern Orthodoxy” (Conversations 9, 2011), and he is working on a book of translations entitled “Around the Maggid’s Table: Torah Interpretations by the Founders of Hasidism” (Jewish Lights, forthcoming), with Arthur Green, Ebn Leader and Or Rose.
